Heat Exchanger Pipe

The copper pipe in the heat exchanger will carry the water to dissipate heat to the air. The pipe is 3/8” Type M copper tube size with a ½” OD and an actual ID of 0.44”. The pipe is the thinnest wall thickness available for best heat transfer characteristics. The pipe will require cutting to size with a copper pipe cutter and cleaning and reaming to be a ready part.

Stand Assembly

The stand assembly consisted of four pieces of aluminum angle bolted together with casters attached to the bottom

Mount

TThe mount part is intended to attach the heat exchanger to the stand. It slides over the bottom 10 copper tubes and the heat exchanger assembly rod  to secure it to the heat exchanger. The bottom of the mount will be bolted to the stand. The mount was manufactured using a milling machine to accurately drill the hole locations.

Mount Rod 

The mount rod is for sway support of the heat exchanger. It connects the two mounts together. 

Fin 

The fins on the heat exchanger were made of 1/16 inch aluminum sheet. They were ripped into the correct width and length of strip and then bundled into stacks of 10-12. Holes were drilled through the stacks on a drill press. 

Initially the fins were to be cut using water jet. It then would be an issue with how long it would take to cut 116 fins and cut 3712 holes. This would cause the water jet to perform nearly 4000 jet start/stop and pierces. This would cause wear to water jet parts and also be an excessive amount of time to cut. 

The fins were manufactured using an alternative method of using a table saw. The fins were ripped to size and bundled into stacks as seen in the image to the right. Each stack consisted of 10-12 fins and were bound tightly with tape. 

Layout marks were applied to the top of each stack and then each stack was drilled through using a drill press. This cut down on machine run time and was more time effective
